Ace Combat 8 Crashing and Stuttering: PC Troubleshooting

Troubleshoot Ace Combat 8 crashes, worsening stutter, ST-3100001 and flight-stick issues with official checks and clear next steps.

If Ace Combat 8 crashes, start with the driver version recommended when the game launches, free space on its SSD, and Windows virtual memory. Bandai Namco has acknowledged Steam crashes and recommends those checks while it investigates. They give you somewhere useful to start, although none is a guaranteed fix.

The next step depends on what actually goes wrong. A flight that gets choppier after several missions needs a different comparison from a lost online connection. Pick the matching symptom below before changing another setting.

Keep the exact error message if there is one. “Crashes on loading Mission X” gives you a much better starting point than “runs badly,” and it makes an unresolved issue easier to report.

Ace Combat 8 crashes or won’t launch

Follow the driver recommendation shown by the game

Bandai Namco’s crash notice tells players to use the recommended graphics driver version indicated at launch. Read that recommendation on your own installation and compare it with your installed version.

If your installed version differs, following the game’s recommendation is a reasonable stability check. Retest the point where the game normally fails after making the change. If the game closes before showing a recommendation, include your installed driver version in the report rather than guessing which version it wanted.

Leave room on the SSD after installation

There are two storage figures to keep separate. Steam lists 150 GB of available space in the PC requirements. Bandai’s crash notice separately recommends 16 GB or more free on the SSD where the game is installed.

For troubleshooting, check the drive containing Ace Combat 8. Having free space on another drive doesn’t satisfy that installed-drive check. If the game’s SSD is nearly full, make room there while preserving your saves and any files you need, then retest.

Keep virtual memory enabled

The same publisher notice asks players to keep Windows virtual memory enabled. If you previously disabled the page file as part of a Windows tweak, restore system management in the virtual-memory settings you changed.

Microsoft documents system-managed page files as the default. Their size depends on the workload and crash-dump requirements, so there isn’t one fixed size to prescribe for every Ace Combat 8 PC. Start by restoring that default rather than selecting an arbitrary number from a troubleshooting list.

If paging is already system-managed, leave it that way for this check.

Verify the Steam installation

Steam recommends file verification when a game is missing content or crashes. For Ace Combat 8:

  1. Restart your PC and open Steam.
  2. Right-click ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE in your Library.
  3. Choose Properties.
  4. Open Installed Files.
  5. Select Verify integrity of game files and let the check finish.

Launch the game again and try the point where it failed. Verification checks whether the installation’s files are correct; an unchanged crash may still need the developer’s attention.

Steam’s PC requirements list Windows 11, an SSD, a hardware ray-tracing-capable GPU, DirectX 12 with Shader Model 6.6 or newer, and 16 GB minimum / 32 GB recommended RAM.

Stutter gets worse the longer you play

A session that starts well and deteriorates later gives you something specific to investigate. Keep your graphics settings unchanged for this comparison:

  1. Fully close Ace Combat 8, reopen it, and play a repeatable mission segment.
  2. Note whether the segment is smooth and observe the game’s memory use alongside total system memory.
  3. Play several missions, then return to the same segment.
  4. Fully restart the game and compare that segment once more.

Compare the same flight

Keep the mission segment and graphics settings unchanged. Record what happens at each stage; memory observations are optional.

Fresh launch
After several missions
After full restart

Without JavaScript, use the three stages above as your observation worksheet. A repeating change is worth reporting; higher memory use alone does not establish a leak.

This records your observations. It does not diagnose a memory leak or prescribe a restart interval.

The useful result is the pattern. Does the same segment become choppier after extended play? Does restarting restore its earlier behavior? Does memory use rise alongside the worsening stutter?

Include those observations in a report if they repeat. Higher memory use alone doesn’t establish a memory leak, and a restart that helps doesn’t tell you exactly why it helped. It can still be a temporary way to get back to a smoother session while you report the problem. There’s no supported reason to prescribe a fixed restart interval for everyone.

If the game performs poorly immediately after every fresh launch, that comparison hasn’t shown a problem that develops over time. Treat consistently low FPS as a graphics-tuning question and keep it separate from the worsening-session symptom.

ST-3100001 in ACE COMBAT ONLINE

Bandai Namco identifies ST-3100001 as an error that appears when communication with the game server is lost. Its specific recommendation is to check for a Windows time discrepancy, synchronize the clock, and test the game again.

Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time. Check the displayed date and time, and turn Set time automatically on if it is off. Confirm the clock is correct before retrying ACE COMBAT ONLINE; enabling automatic time by itself isn’t proof that synchronization has completed.

If the error returns, keep the code and note when it appears: entering the online mode, joining a session, or during a mission. The clock check is worth doing because it comes from the publisher, but it doesn’t guarantee recovery from every lost connection.

Flight sticks and missing control options

If your HOTAS setup is missing an option you used in Ace Combat 7, the game may be the limiting part. In its September 30 Flight Stick Support Update, Bandai Namco acknowledged that some configuration options for certain devices were available in Ace Combat 7 but absent in Ace Combat 8.

That is narrower than saying all flight sticks are unsupported. It also means a missing familiar option isn’t automatically evidence that your hardware has failed.

Describe the device and the behavior precisely: an axis that isn’t recognized, a binding option that is absent, or a button that produces the wrong action. Include the stick model and any separate throttle or pedals. The team said it was exploring improvements, but the inspected notice gave no confirmed delivery date.

For an ordinary controller problem, describe what input the game receives and how the controller is connected. Keep the configuration consistent while you collect those details, so your report describes a setup you can reproduce.

Send a report the team can investigate

After the relevant checks, an unresolved crash needs a useful report. Bandai’s official PC Crash Report Thread asks for hardware specifications, Windows and system software versions, the error and reproduction steps, and other applications running alongside the game.

Without JavaScript, use the fields as a reporting outline and copy your entries manually. The template below will not update.

Missing details stay “Not supplied.” Include observed behavior rather than a diagnosis you cannot establish.

For worsening stutter, add the fresh-session comparison. For a device problem, add the model and the missing input or option. Report what you observed without turning it into a diagnosis you can’t establish.

Post crash details in the official PC Crash Report Thread (opens in a new tab). Once the basics have been checked, a repeatable report is the next useful step.

Frequently asked questions

Does Ace Combat 8 have a confirmed memory leak?

This guide’s evidence doesn’t establish a universal memory leak. If stutter worsens over a session, compare the same mission before and after a full restart and observe memory use. A repeating pattern is useful to report; one high RAM reading isn’t a diagnosis.

How much free space should I keep for troubleshooting?

Bandai recommends at least 16 GB free on the SSD containing the installed game as a stability check. This is remaining space after installation.

Should I turn off the Windows page file?

Keep virtual memory enabled, as the publisher recommends. If you disabled the page file, restore system management. Windows manages page files by default, and the appropriate size depends on the system’s workload.

What does ST-3100001 mean?

It means ACE COMBAT ONLINE lost communication with the game server. Bandai recommends checking and synchronizing Windows time before retesting. If it persists, report the exact code and the point where it occurs.

Can a driver update restore missing flight-stick options?

The publisher acknowledged that some Ace Combat 7 configuration options are absent for certain devices in Ace Combat 8. A graphics driver change isn’t an established remedy for that limitation. Identify the device and missing option when reporting it.
