FiveM Stuttering & Low FPS: Find the Next Fix

Separate FiveM camera hitches, delayed players, resource load and missing textures. Use ordinary diagnostics and send a useful server report.

A camera that freezes while you turn and a player who teleports across a smooth scene need different checks. Before changing another graphics preset, watch which part of FiveM is struggling: your view, remote movement, or the world loading around you.

Open the console with F8 and enter cl_drawperf true. FiveM’s user overlay separates FPS, ping and packet loss. Use it beside the symptom, rather than treating every interrupted chase as low FPS. A low ping reading doesn’t prove the PC is responsible, and a low GPU percentage doesn’t prove the server is at fault.

The goal is one useful next check. If lowering rendering cost improves the troublesome route, keep tuning graphics. If a pause follows the same custom interior or action, collect that detail for the server owner. Trying every tweak at once can leave you with a worse picture and the same hitch.

Check the edition before following a fix

FiveM offers Legacy and Enhanced clients. Legacy requires GTA V Legacy; Enhanced requires GTA V Enhanced and is currently in Early Access. Use the pairing your server supports. The official download page (opens in a new tab) lists the editions separately.

That split affects diagnostics as well as graphics. Some old commands require developer access, and Enhanced no longer accepts the Legacy shortcut for enabling it. A command refusing to run can be an access restriction, rather than another symptom of a broken installation.

Requirements also differ by edition. A base minimum is not a promise that a custom server’s vehicles, interiors and scripts fit comfortably into your machine. GTA V Enhanced’s publisher requirements specify an SSD. Check that foundation before assuming a stock-game comparison represents your server’s workload.

If the client displays the specific Game data outdated error, allow its prompted update and restart. That repairs the named game-data problem; it isn’t a general FPS tweak. Avoid forcing a game-build number from an old guide, since the server owns compatibility choices.

Read FPS, ping and packet loss separately

The performance overlay is an ordinary user command. You don’t need to switch to a development channel to use it:

cl_drawperf true

Watch what happens during the actual interruption:

ObservationUseful next check
Your camera or the entire local picture becomes choppyCompare the same route after reducing rendering cost; look for a repeatable action or loading event.
Your camera stays smooth while remote players jump or arrive lateWatch ping and packet loss, and compare the connection and another server.
Roads, vehicles or interior textures arrive late or disappearInvestigate asset loading and memory headroom; note the exact location or asset.
Opening an inventory or entering one custom area repeatedly causes a pauseGive the server owner a reproducible trigger for resource or asset investigation.

Choose the next check

Focus a route by what you can see. These are investigation leads, not a diagnosis or an FPS prediction.

All four routes. Read the edition notes beside your next check.

Camera or whole picture hitches

Compare local rendering cost

Keep the route, cap and synchronization fixed. Reduce a meaningful rendering setting, then revisit the same event. If the picture improves, continue graphics tuning; if it barely changes, look for the repeatable trigger.

A low GPU percentage or high average FPS cannot identify the cause of a brief pause.

Remote players jump, camera stays smooth

Record ping and packet loss during the jump

Use cl_drawperf true in F8. Compare another server with the same client settings and, where practical, another connection. Report remote movement separately from your camera smoothness.

Normal overlay readings do not exclude every networking or server-update problem.

Roads or textures appear late

Find the asset or transition that repeats

Note the vehicle, interior or location, and whether the problem occurs only on first entry or every revisit. Compare lower Texture Quality with the same route and other settings.

Missing textures do not prove which allocation or loading step failed. Routine cache deletion is not an established general fix.

An inventory or server action pauses

Give the administrator a repeatable action

Record the exact feature and steps. An appropriately permitted resource trace can help the administrator investigate execution work around the pause.

resmon reports client resource execution and memory; it does not account for every part of rendering or prove a server-process cause.

Legacy context

Legacy requires GTA V Legacy. Start Extended Texture Budget at its default; increasing it can worsen memory pressure. Developer diagnostics can require access. The Legacy profiler guide records a number of frames.

Enhanced context

Enhanced requires GTA V Enhanced and is in Early Access. Use its own rendering menu. Developer access is server-controlled; the Legacy launch argument was removed. Enhanced uses a different Perfetto profiler workflow, so do not transfer Legacy command examples.

These observations narrow where to look. Several problems can overlap: a crowded area can have demanding graphics, custom resource work and network activity at the same time.

FPS describes how many frames the client draws per second. Ping, in milliseconds, is server round-trip delay. Packet loss describes packets failing to arrive in time. A stable FPS counter doesn’t rule out a brief hitch between readings, so include the visible pause in your notes.

Turn the overlay off when finished:

cl_drawperf false

Repeat the route that actually struggles

Pick a short route that includes the troublesome junction, interior or interaction. Repeat it on the same server with the same graphics settings. Note whether the pause happens on entry, during movement or when you use a particular feature.

Then make one relevant change. For a rendering check, reduce a graphics setting and drive the route again. For a server-workload comparison, try another server with the same client settings. An empty area is useful as another observation, but it doesn’t reproduce the workload of a busy garage full of custom cars.

A better result on another server establishes that the symptom depends on the workload you encountered. It doesn’t prove the first server is broken or that your hardware has enough room for everything it loads. Likewise, a quiet location running well doesn’t settle whether the busy location is limited by graphics, resource execution or streaming.

Keep the comparison small enough to explain. “Same route, lower texture quality, pause still occurs when entering this garage” gives the next person something to investigate. “I optimized Windows and changed everything” leaves them guessing which state you’re testing.

If the whole picture is choppy, test rendering first

For Legacy, MSAA, vegetation detail and extended distance detail are sensible places to reduce rendering work. Our FiveM graphics settings guide (opens in a new tab) keeps the starting choices and visual tradeoffs together, so you can tune without copying a second complete preset here.

Don’t immediately drop every texture to the lowest setting. Texture detail matters when memory is constrained, while anti-aliasing and distant detail ask different things of the renderer. If lower rendering settings improve the route, restore the visual feature you care about most before spending more time chasing the FPS counter.

Enhanced has a different rendering menu. Use its available settings rather than a Legacy DirectX or MSAA recipe. Its Early Access documentation also says graphics mods are unavailable because pure mode is always enabled. Installing a Legacy visual pack isn’t an appropriate way to troubleshoot that client.

If the pause barely changes after a meaningful graphics reduction, move on to its trigger. Low aggregate GPU utilization can accompany a frame cap, synchronization, CPU work or other waits. The percentage alone doesn’t choose between them.

If remote movement jumps, check the network symptom

When your camera moves smoothly but remote players teleport, pay attention to ping and packet loss at the same moment. Compare another server and, where practical, another connection. Keep the client settings fixed for that comparison.

An increase in packet loss or round-trip delay is useful to report, but a normal reading doesn’t exclude every networking or server-update problem. The overlay is a short view of the connection, and remote movement depends on more than the quality of your local rendering.

Graphics changes may improve how your own picture moves while leaving delayed remote updates untouched. Report those outcomes separately instead of calling both “lag.” The distinction matters to the person choosing between a connection investigation and a resource trace.

If textures arrive late, investigate what is loading

Note whether the issue starts with a specific vehicle, a dense group of custom cars, or an interior transition. A repeatable asset gives the server owner somewhere concrete to inspect. Also note whether it happens on first entry or returns every time you revisit the location.

On Legacy, leave Extended Texture Budget at its default for the first comparison. Raising it can worsen memory pressure on constrained hardware. If you already increased it and the hitches became worse, restore the earlier value. A universal VRAM-to-slider percentage doesn’t account for the server’s assets.

Lowering Texture Quality can be a useful comparison when texture loading and memory headroom are the concern. Keep the route and other settings fixed so the result describes that change. Missing roads alone don’t prove which allocation, asset or loading step failed.

Repeated cache deletion is a poor first response to this symptom. Enhanced already removes cached files no longer served by the server; further cache-management controls described in Cfx’s development announcement were plans. Follow error-specific support instructions when you have a named error, rather than treating deletion as a routine performance maintenance task.

Resource diagnostics belong with the right permissions

If an inventory, menu or server feature repeatedly triggers the pause, a resource execution trace can be more useful than another graphics preset. This section is optional developer or administrator work; ordinary players can send the observations above without enabling these tools.

resmon true opens the resource monitor where access permits. It reports client resource CPU execution time and memory. It doesn’t account for every part of GPU rendering, and an expensive resource isn’t proof that the server process caused your hitch. A profiler can help identify which execution work coincides with the event.

Legacy developer mode can be enabled on the stable client with the launch argument +set moo 31337. Avoid switching to Beta or Latest just to gain access: those channels can introduce instability. For Enhanced, that Legacy argument was removed. Developer access is server-controlled; ask the administrator rather than pasting server configuration into the F8 client console.

The profilers also differ. The Legacy guide describes recording a number of frames and saving with profiler saveJSON. Enhanced uses a Perfetto backend with different recording and saving instructions. Don’t carry a Legacy numeric example into Enhanced as though its units were interchangeable.

The official console reference (opens in a new tab) documents user and developer commands; Enhanced users also need the edition migration reference (opens in a new tab) for its access changes. resmon, netgraph and streaming tools can refuse access on a production client. That refusal isn’t a reason to bypass the server’s restrictions.

Send a report the server owner can use

A useful report names the event and preserves the comparison. Include:

  • Legacy or Enhanced, server name, time and location.
  • What you saw: camera hitch, delayed players, missing textures or a specific action pause.
  • FPS, ping and packet-loss observations during the event, if available.
  • The route or steps that reproduce it, including the vehicle, interior or feature involved.
  • What you changed and whether the same event remained.
  • Whether another server showed the symptom with the same client settings.

Attach a short capture if it shows the trigger, and remove personal information from anything you share. The administrator can then reproduce the event or request an appropriately permitted trace. You don’t need to diagnose their code to give them a useful lead.

Build a useful server report

Record what happened, then review and copy the report for your administrator. This tool sends and saves nothing.

Legacy or Enhanced; include the client version if known

Server name, when it happened, and the route or location

Camera hitch, delayed players, missing textures or a specific action pause

FPS, ping and packet loss during the event; unknown is useful too

Vehicle, interior or feature involved; first entry or repeated visits

One change, same route, and what remained; another server with settings fixed if tried

Without JavaScript, use the fields as an outline and edit the report below manually. The template will not update automatically.

Missing fields stay “Not supplied.” You can edit the report directly; changing a field rebuilds it. Remove personal information before sharing.

No observations supplied. Unknown details are not a diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

Why does FiveM stutter when my FPS looks high?

An FPS counter can miss a brief pause between readings. Describe the hitch and its trigger, then compare the same route. Resource execution, loading, rendering and network symptoms need different checks; a high average alone doesn't settle the cause.

Does low GPU usage mean the server is the problem?

No. A cap, synchronization, CPU work or other waits can leave the GPU less busy. Compare the symptom and use an appropriate trace before assigning a cause.

Which command can ordinary players use?

Open F8 and enter `cl_drawperf true` to display the performance overlay. `cl_drawperf false` disables it. Developer diagnostics such as `resmon` can require additional access.

Why does resmon say access denied?

It is a developer command and can be restricted on production clients. Legacy and Enhanced have different access rules; Enhanced removed the Legacy developer launch argument. Ask the server administrator for help.

Should I increase Extended Texture Budget?

Start at the Legacy default. Increasing it can worsen memory pressure on constrained hardware, so reverse a change if hitching increases. No universal slider percentage is established for a given VRAM capacity.

Will clearing the cache fix FiveM stuttering?

Routine cache deletion isn't an established general fix. Identify the symptom first and follow specific support instructions for a named error. Enhanced already removes cached files that a server no longer serves.

Can I follow Legacy profiler instructions in Enhanced?

Don't transfer them directly. Enhanced uses a Perfetto backend and different permissions and commands. The Legacy frame-count example doesn't establish the units for Enhanced recording.

What should I send to a server administrator?

Send your edition, server, time, location, symptom, reproduction steps and overlay observations. Include a same-settings comparison when available. A repeatable trigger is more useful than an unsupported diagnosis.
