DLSS 5 Explained: FPS Cost, GPUs, Games & Mods

DLSS 5 Explained: FPS cost, GPUs, and games — Hone tech guide thumbnail.

DLSS 5 changes how light, skin, hair, and cloth look in a game. The effect takes extra work from your graphics card, so it can cut your frame rate. Turn it on only if you like the look and the game still feels smooth. This work runs on the GPU, or graphics processor.

FPS means frames per second. Base FPS counts the frames the game draws before extra, AI-made frames are added. Those extra frames can make motion look smoother. They do not give the same gain in response to your mouse or keys.

What is DLSS 5?

NVIDIA calls the new effect 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. In NBA 2K27, its menu name is DLSS Neural Rendering. It uses the image drawn by the game, plus data on how things move, to change the final look.

It can change how light passes through skin and hair, how cloth looks, and how shadows meet a surface. The game still draws the scene first. Its usual lighting methods, such as ray tracing, still matter.

NVIDIA says the same inputs give the same output. It also says motion data helps keep the image steady as you move. These are NVIDIA’s design claims, not proof that every scene is free of flaws. Game artists can choose a model, tune light and color, or limit the effect to parts of the scene.

This is the order seen in NBA 2K27. Other games and mods may use a different path.

Does DLSS 5 improve FPS?

Neural Rendering adds work. The other DLSS tools have different jobs, which the table below explains. You can use some of them together when the game supports them.

NVIDIA’s “370 FPS at 4K” figure uses an RTX 5090 with the Ultra Preset and ray tracing. It also uses Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation. That is a result for the full set of tools, not a speed gain from Neural Rendering alone.

In TechSpot’s NBA 2K27 tests, the effect ran after upscaling. Much of its cost came from the final image size. A lower Super Resolution mode did little to cut that cost. This finding applies to this game’s launch build, not every future game or mod.

DLSS 5 vs DLSS 4.5

DLSS 4.5 and DLSS 5 are parts of the same set of tools. Here is what each part does.

Which GPUs and games support DLSS 5?

As of September 16, 2026, NVIDIA lists RTX 50 desktop and laptop GPUs for local DLSS 5 play. GeForce NOW Ultimate also offers it on RTX 5080 cloud rigs run by NVIDIA, where those rigs are available.

TechSpot reports that NVIDIA plans to work on RTX 40 support after more RTX 50 tuning. There is no release date in that statement. A plan is not support you can use now. NVIDIA’s current pages still list RTX 50 for this feature. The game developer must add it; an app setting cannot switch it on in every game.

What the benchmarks really show

Hardware Unboxed/TechSpot tested an early-access copy of NBA 2K27 with NVIDIA’s supported driver. Frame Generation was off. The settings were not the same on every card. DLAA smooths edges at the full image size; Super Resolution starts with a smaller image.

NBA 2K27 chart: RTX 5090 at 4K falls from 192 to 76 FPS; RTX 5080 at 1440p falls from 221 to 102 FPS. Neural Rendering off versus on, with Frame Generation off.
Hardware Unboxed/TechSpot: NBA 2K27, September 2026. Frame Generation off. RTX 5090: 4K, max settings, DLAA. RTX 5080: 1440p; its preset and Super Resolution mode are unconfirmed. The chart does not show the RTX 5060 Low-settings test.

RTX 5080 · 1440p1440p · Preset and SR mode unconfirmed
RTX 5060 · 1080p73 FPS enabled · Low · Upscaling mode unconfirmed

The RTX 5060 used Low settings to avoid a video-memory warning. Its 73 FPS result is not a max-settings test. These figures show the cost in one launch game, not what every game will do.

For your own test, keep the scene and final image size the same. Record the preset, upscaling mode, and whether Frame Generation is on. Check frame time too: it is the time needed to draw each frame. Sudden spikes can feel like stutter even when the average looks good. Also compare 1% lows, a measure of the slowest frames. Use the same tool and method, since tools calculate this in different ways.

Should you enable DLSS 5?

First, get a steady frame rate with the effect off. Then compare the same scene with it on. Move the camera and look at faces, hair, plants, dark areas, and the game’s on-screen menus. Keep it only if you like the change and the controls still feel good.

If the game is slow or choppy, turn the effect off before adding more generated frames. Watch for video-memory warnings and stutter as you move through the world. An 8GB card does not have one safe setting for every game. In fast online games, put quick response first. You can also leave the effect off if you prefer the game’s original art.

What DLSS5-Swapper does—and its limits

DLSS5-Swapper is a community tool. It can find games, back up files, add the mod files, and restore them later. The way it adds the effect can change with each release. An “Installed” label alone does not show that the effect is running.

Check that the add-on says it is active. Then compare one fixed scene with the effect off and on. Look for a repeatable image change and a change in GPU work or frame time. These checks help show that it is running. They do not turn a mod into official game support. A mod may lack the game artist’s tuning or the right scene data, and a patch may break it.

How to reduce risk if you test the utility

Close the game before changing its files. Write down the game build, driver, tool version, mod method, graphics API, image size, and DLSS modes. The API is the graphics system the game uses, such as DirectX 12. Use the tool’s per-game restore option if needed. Removing the tool itself may leave changed game files behind. Check those files with the game launcher after you restore them.

FAQ

What does DLSS 5 actually do?

It uses the game’s image and motion data to change light and surface detail. That can change the look of skin, hair, cloth, and shadows.

Does DLSS 5 increase FPS?

Not by itself. It adds work and can lower the rate at which the game draws frames. Super Resolution can help speed up rendering. Frame Generation adds extra display frames, which are a different measure.

Is DLSS 5 the same as Frame Generation?

No. Neural Rendering changes how a frame looks. Frame Generation adds frames between the ones the game draws. A game can offer both.

What is the difference between DLSS 5 and DLSS 4.5?

DLSS 4.5 improves tools such as upscaling and frame generation. DLSS 5 adds a new way to change light and material detail. It adds to those tools rather than replacing them.

Which GPUs officially support DLSS 5?

RTX 50 desktop and laptop GPUs have official local support as of September 16, 2026. TechSpot reports a plan for RTX 40 support, but no release date. Do not treat that plan as a feature you can use today.

Which games have native DLSS 5 support?

NBA 2K27 is the released game in NVIDIA’s launch coverage. The other games listed above are planned titles, demos, or modded examples. Those labels do not mean a DLSS 5 patch is out.

Can DLSS 5 be added to unsupported games?

Some community mods can add the effect. They may have image flaws, crashes, or missing scene data. A game patch can break them. That is different from support built into the game.

Is DLSS5-Swapper safe to use with anti-cheat games?

Do not use it unless the game developer and anti-cheat maker allow that exact tool and version. A successful launch is not proof that your account is safe. Restoring files may not undo an account flag.
