What PS5 and Xbox players need
For the supported console pairing, 2K lists an NBA 2K account, an internet connection, and a separate paid online console subscription as requirements. Before your group buys copies or schedules a session, check that each player has:

- An NBA 2K account.
- An internet connection.
- The required separate paid online console subscription.
Treat that subscription as a separate purchase check, rather than assuming the game purchase covers online console play. The FAQ describes cross-platform competition in co-op matches and online tournaments. It is not an exhaustive named-mode guide, so check your intended mode as well as the platform pairing before organizing a regular session.
Crossplay is not a promise of shared progress
Crossplay means playing together across supported platforms. Cross-progression means carrying progress between versions. Shared currency and a shared marketplace are separate capabilities again. One feature does not establish the others.
Playing with a friend on another console is different from moving your player or collection to that console. Before buying a second copy, check 2K’s transfer terms for the exact versions, progress and purchases involved. The crossplay FAQ alone does not answer that question.
Choose around your regular squad
Start with the people you actually plan to play with. A group split between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S has the documented crossplay pairing, subject to the requirements above. A friend on PC or Switch 2 cannot join that console pool under the FAQ’s stated support. Make that distinction before choosing a version based on price or the system you already own.
